Voice chat, microphone and walkie-talkie
Both players need a working microphone. Up close you can hear each other. Apart, you use the walkie-talkie. If voice dies, the studio's support article is the checklist: default device, invite instead of the room finder, ports, and no Xbox party at the same time.
What I checked
I used the official microphone article rather than a Reddit thread. Launch-week Steam reviews complain about dropouts, which matches why that article exists. I am not adding a config file download.
How the two channels differ
Proximity voice is for when you are in the same space. The walkie-talkie is the radio for when the puzzle splits you. Push-to-talk and the device picker are in the support steps. Japanese search interest around close-range voice is this system, not a separate mode.
When nobody can hear you
The official order is: pick the same default microphone in the game and in the operating system, invite your partner instead of relying on the room finder, open the Photon and Vivox ports the article names, leave Xbox party chat, and reload a checkpoint if the radio prop itself vanishes.
If the voice server still rejects you, the article says to retry, check console privacy, and treat a VPN as a bad idea. Discord is the fallback they mention, not a mod.
Questions
Is voice optional?
No. The puzzle design and the PC requirements both assume a microphone.
Can we use headphones only?
You still need a microphone on the headset.
The radio vanished.
Reload the last checkpoint, then recheck the device.
Keep going
