Story explained
Two explorers wake in a Norcek Industries facility under Antarctic ice, in a retro-futuristic take on the 1980s. Director Kathleen Bowe needs help finishing a missing research team's work before a wider crisis. The store line is that only together you decide the fate of tomorrow.
What I checked
The setup is from the store pages and the press release. I did not invent a scene between the opening and the finale. The ending paragraph is labeled as the achievement text, which is official, plus the community names for the buttons, which are not.
What you can say without spoilers
You and one partner are separated often enough that a walkie-talkie matters. The tools change what each of you can touch. You do not need the plot of Forever or Together to follow this one. The FAQ says the stories stand alone even when they share the studio's world.
Norcek is the company on the crates. Kathleen Bowe is the director. Some community pages spell the surname Bow. The store pages I checked use Bowe.
Ending, if you want it — reveal spoilers
The last console asks you to close the rift or stabilize it. Steam's achievements call those outcomes Tomorrow May Never Come and Dawn of Tomorrow. Which button maps to which achievement is still a community inference. There is no third, secret ending in the sources I trust.

It is the fifth mainline game and the sixth release, because Expeditions is a spin-off. The story does not require the earlier games.
Who wrote it?
Claire North, per the launch press release.
Is the 2024 TV show the same story?
No. See the former-title page for that one-line split.
