We Were Here games in order

Release order is We Were Here, Too, Together, Forever, Expeditions: The FriendShip, then Tomorrow. Tomorrow is the fifth mainline game. It is the sixth game overall because Expeditions is a spin-off. You do not need the earlier games.

What I checked

The FAQ says the games stand alone and that Tomorrow is the fifth mainline entry. I did not find an official story-order list that differs from release order, so release order is the recommendation I will defend.

Where to start

New players can start with Tomorrow. It is the current game and the FAQ does not assign homework.

If you want the studio's history, play the free first game, then Too, Together and Forever. Expeditions is a short spin-off you can slot after Forever or skip until later.

A short session is the first game or Expeditions. A long session is Forever or Tomorrow.

Why people argue about five versus six

Counting only mainline games gives five, and Tomorrow is the fifth. Counting Expeditions gives six releases, and Tomorrow is the sixth. Both sentences are true. Calling it the sixth mainline game is the version that is wrong.
